Job Details: Co-Op Student (Non-Union T) Posting Status: Open to all current Town of Oakville employees and external applicants This is a co-op opportunity lasting approximately 4 or 8 months commencing May 2020. Reporting to and under the direct supervision of the Manager of Design and Construction or designate, this position is responsible for duties related, but not limited to assisting engineering staff on municipal rehabilitation and improvement projects for roads, culverts, bridges, and storm sewers. Job Responsibilities: Reporting to and under the direct supervision of the Manager of Design and Construction or designate, this position is responsible for duties related, but not limited to assisting engineering staff on municipal rehabilitation and improvement projects for roads, culverts, bridges, and storm sewers. Principal duties include: Assist in the inspection and contract administration of municipal road construction projects Measuring quantity of work performed by the contractor, maintaining daily work records of events, inspection of materials used on the project Review of grades and alignment for compliance with engineering plans Preparation of contract item summary forms and compute contract payments Maintain daily written records of work-related activities. Apply safety precautions and procedures in the performance of all duties, in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Transportation Act and policies of the Corporation. Communicate courteously with the general public and where necessary refer them to a permanent staff member. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications: Student enrolled in a university or community college program in Civil Engineering or Construction Engineering Technology. Familiar with computer applications such as AutoCAD, Excel, Word, Database applications and GIS A valid and unrestricted Ontario Driver’s Licence Class G2 required (Ontario Driver’s Licence Class G preferred) with a driving record that demonstrates responsible and safe driving behaviour. Note: Applicants with 6 or more points are ineligible for consideration. Successful applicants will be required to provide the Corporation with a copy of their drivers licence and a current drivers abstract (no older than 30 days) and all new hires will be required to pass a Town administered road test as a condition of employment. Note: The successful candidate will be required to supply their own vehicle for performing job duties/corporate business. Ability to deal with the public courteously and effectively. Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions. Good interpersonal skills. Ability and willingness to work in varying climate conditions. Note: The successful applicant will be required to provide their own green patch work boots.
