Position Description: Intern Program Overview Serco’s Training and Experience Program (STEP) is designed to provide college students an internship opportunity to gain meaningful, hands-on work experience in a professional environment. STEP emphasizes developing the next generation’s workforce. Our goal is to build a roadmap that leads you to a long, rewarding and challenging career with Serco. We will work with you to determine your desired career path and the correct steps to get you to your goals. Outside of gaining hands-on experience, you will attend training sessions taught by skilled leaders in our company. These training sessions range from finance, personality in the workplace, presentation skills, resume building, and more. In addition, Serco emphasizes being environmentally friendly and making a positive difference in the community. We challenge our interns to develop and execute on at least one group initiative that will benefit the office and/or local community. Projects in the past have included a park cleanup and a recycling drive. This internship spans over 12 weeks—11 weeks worked with 1 week off for Fourth of July and half days on Fridays. You will work with your mentor to identify the best times for you to come in and leave work. You will work no more than an average of 36 hours a week. Job Description As an engineering intern at our San Diego location, you will participate in a rotational assignment across our various strategic capabilities: Ship Modernization, Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection (ATFP), and Hardware Integration. You will spend three weeks at each rotational assignment with your intern group. Having exposure to each of these three capabilities will better prepare you to be a well-rounded engineer and provide an opportunity to demonstrate your skills and character in a real-world setting. Moreover, it is an opportunity for personal and professional development while learning something new. Ship Modernization Serco’s Ship Modernization team executes C5I Installations onboard U.S. Navy ships and submarines. The team is responsible for removing designated electronic systems and installing new cables and metal foundations for new and upgraded communication, command and control, networking, intelligence and computer systems. The work is performed under the Global Installation Contract (GIC) with the Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC) and is vital to providing the Navy with new warfighting capabilities and technologies. ATFP Serco ATFP engineers and technicians provide support to the U. S. Navy’s Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) ATFP Ashore Program, whose mission is to design, procure, integrate, install, and sustain the systems and equipment required to protect mission-critical assets, personnel, and their families from natural disasters, acts of terrorism, and other human-caused disasters. These systems and equipment are vital to our nation’s first responders in the performance of their duties and for maintaining the safety of our military bases domestic and abroad. The barrier systems Serco services keep out countless intruders as well as detain domestic offenders on base to be dealt with accordingly. Hardware Integration The Serco Hardware Integration and Production group is focused on the assembly and integration of Navy electronic equipment and systems to be deployed on board ships, submarines, and at shore installations. The Serco Warehouse and Integration Facility (SWIF) is a light industrial production facility where Serco builds the Advanced Digital Network System (ADNS) and Consolidated Afloat Network Enterprise System (CANES) for the U.S. Navy. These systems are critical to the successful operation of Navy ships and facilities. During the hardware integration phase of your internship, you will be exposed to various manufacturing roles at the SWIF with a focus on the practical application of engineering knowledge to production issues. Roles and Responsibilities General Complete work assignments in a thorough, consistent and punctual manner. Adhere to company work hours, policies, procedures, and rules governing professional staff behavior. Adhere to company and professional ethics governing the handling of confidential information and the observation of confidentiality. Maintain professional relationships with company employees, clients and customers, both internal and external. Ship Modernization Loading, unloading, and staging installation materials. Pulling cable through wireways and assist in cable tagging and banding. Fabricating and assembling various electromechanical and electronic assemblies. Gathering and maintaining specified records of engineering data such as tests, drawings, etc. Assembling or installing equipment or parts requiring simple wiring, soldering, or connecting. Installing electronic equipment, ducts, cableways, cables, and high-density cable connectors. Assembling cable harnesses. Soldering with low voltage soldering devices and coaxial connectors. Assembling small mechanical parts per fabrication/assembly drawings. ATFP Assisting the Field Service Engineer or Site Lead in troubleshooting and maintaining ATFP systems and equipment. Using hand tools to resolve issues with ATFP equipment in the field (e.g., alarms, cameras, access gates). SWIF Providing manufacturing engineering support, quality assurance, configuration management and production planning. Assembling and integrating racks and equipment. Troubleshooting non-compliant material. Working with assemblers and technicians to resolve production issues. Qualifications: Requirements: Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree or 4-year degree at an accredited university Ideal candidates will be rising juniors or rising seniors Pursuing a degree in Engineering or related field Effective communication skills Ability to work in a highly dynamic environment Self-motivated with a strong work initiative Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills Ability to work well against deadlines and adapt to change Proficient with PC and MS Office Suite #STEPEngineering Company Overview: Serco Inc.
