We have an opportunity for a motivated and pro-active Scientist to join the microbiology team at the Charles River Laboratories Portishead site in the UK. The site is focused on providing support to a range of global pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies in areas of bacterial and viral infection. We work on projects from early drug discovery through to pre-clinical trials. The successful applicant will join a dynamic and flexible team using a variety of laboratory techniques as part of in vitro and in vivo studies. There will be ample scope for the individual to utilise existing skills, learn new, aid development of novel assays and thereby expand the repertoire of expertise within the team. The vacancies exist within our Microbiology team, who develop and run a wide range of microbiology and immunology assays. Techniques include, general microbiology such as bacterial growth, MIC, MBC, resistance testing, qPCR and processing of animal tissue for assessment of bacterial load and pathology. Immunological assays such as flow cytometry, Luminex, Nanostring, ELISA, confocal microscopy and culture of primary cells and cell lines may also be required. Post holders will work on exciting novel treatments for human infectious diseases, making a genuine contribution to moving potential new drugs into the clinic. The job will also involve routine laboratory duties, such as consumables ordering, preparing COSHH and risk assessment forms, and ensuring the cleanliness of the laboratory. Charles River offers a supportive environment in which training and progression are provided. Requirements: A background in Microbiology and a good command of biomedical sciences. Ideally a degree in biological sciences/microbiology although other experienced candidates will be considered. Some experience in developing, optimizing and executing biological assays ideally in a pharma or biotech setting. Highly organised with an ability to plan own day to day activities within given work programme with agreement of manager. Capable of expressing technical information/views in an accurate and understandable way. Personnel have a responsibility to understand and follow the company’s quality management system, maintain accurate records and work to a high standard. An understanding of the drug discovery process would be an advantage. Previous employment in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry would be an advantage.
